Different Types of Frosting
American Butter Cream
A frosting made from butter, sugar, heavy cream or whole milk, and flavoring. It absorbs food coloring well, making it good for intricate designs.


German Buttercream
A beaten butter frosting that's also known as custard buttercream or pastry-cream butter.
French buttercream
A rich and creamy frosting made with egg yolks instead of egg whites. It's softer and doesn't hold its shape well, so it's often used as a filling, base, or cupcake topper.

Different Types of Frosting
Swiss Merinque Buttercream
A light and smooth frosting that's less sweet than American buttercream. It's often used to fill cakes and cupcakes, and it's pale in color so it's good for adding color.


Italian Merinque Buttercream
A meringue-based frosting made by whipping egg whites with hot simple syrup.
Ermine Butter cream
Smooth, rich and with a flavor similar to cream cheese frosting (minus the cream cheese), ermine frosting is as firm as classic buttercream but much less sweet, with a great texture and taste that works best with red velvet, butter, chocolate or other richly flavored cakes. If a light bite is more your speed, try it on white cake for a uniquely simple flavor combination.

Cream Cheese Frosting
Cream cheese frosting is my #1 favorite frosting for cakes, cupcakes, quick breads, and more. In fact, it’s the most common frosting used in my kitchen. I use it on everything from spice cake and carrot cake cupcakes to banana cake, red velvet cake, pumpkin cake, and more.
It’s smooth, creamy, and spreads onto baked goods with ease. Its flavor is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy.


Ganache
A frosting and glaze that can be used in a variety of ways. When it's warm and liquid, it can be poured over a cake for a shiny glaze. When it's cooled to room temperature, it can be spread and used as a filling or frosting.
Whip Cream Frosting
Sometimes you need a frosting that is a little lighter than regular buttercream frosting, at those times you should try our Best Whipped Cream Frosting. It is light and airy and delicious and tastes just like Whipped Cream. But unlike regular Whipped Cream, this frosting holds its shape, lasts for days, and can be used to frost both cake and cupcakes. It would be great on any dessert that calls for frosting, a chocolate cupcake, or a strawberry angel food cake.

Fondant is a soft, thick icing that is used to coat and decorate cakes. It is pliable, similar to the texture and consistency of play dough, which makes it easy to work with and shape. This recipe is made by combining marshmallows and powdered sugar. It has way better flavor than store bought fondant and it’s easy to color with food coloring.
